Yankees Acquire Left-hander Caleb Ferguson from Dodgers
Trade Bolsters Bullpen
NEW YORK --
The New York Yankees continued to bolster their bullpen on Monday, acquiring left-hander Caleb Ferguson from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The trade was announced by the Yankees on Monday afternoon and is pending a physical.
Ferguson, 27, was 5-4 with a 3.63 ERA in 63 appearances out of the bullpen for the Dodgers last season. He struck out 68 batters in 56 2/3 innings pitched and held opponents to a .221 batting average.
The Yankees are expected to use Ferguson as a multi-inning reliever, a role he has filled successfully in the past. He has also started nine games in his career, but the Yankees are unlikely to use him in that role.
In return for Ferguson, the Yankees are sending the Dodgers a player to be named later. The Dodgers are also sending cash to the Yankees as part of the deal.
The Yankees now have a solid group of left-handed relievers, with Ferguson joining Lucas Luetge, Wandy Peralta, and Aroldis Chapman in the bullpen. The Yankees also have several other relievers who can pitch from the left side, giving them plenty of options out of the bullpen.
