Tornado-Warned Storms Leave Damage in Chicagoland
Cleanup Underway After Severe Weather
Chicagoland residents are assessing the damage and cleaning up Tuesday morning after powerful storms ripped through the region overnight.
The entire Chicago area was placed under a tornado watch Monday evening as severe storms barreled toward the region, threatening wind gusts in excess of 80 mph.
The tornado watches expired early Tuesday morning, but not before causing widespread damage across the region.
A tornado warning siren went off in the newsroom as FOX 32 Chicago meteorologists were covering the city's severe weather on live TV.
Meteorologist Mike Caplan said the storms were "the most significant severe weather event we've seen in Chicagoland in several years."
The National Weather Service is expected to survey the damage Tuesday morning to determine if any tornadoes touched down.
Several communities across Chicagoland reported downed trees and power lines, as well as damage to homes and businesses.
In some areas, flooding was also a concern, as heavy rains caused rivers and streams to overflow their banks.
ComEd reported that more than 100,000 customers were without power in the Chicago area as of Tuesday morning.
Crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible, but some customers may be without power for several days.
