Boxing scandal at Paris Olympics
Italian fighter withdraws from bout
Algeria's Imane Khelif wins by default
A scandal has erupted at the boxing at the Paris Olympics after Italian fighter Angela Carini withdrew from her bout in the womens 66kg category.
Carini, who had boxed her way to a quota spot at the Boxing 1st World Qualification Tournament, abandoned the match on Thursday against Algerian athlete Imane Khelif, who failed a gender verification test before the games but was later cleared to compete.
The Italian boxer dedicated her win at the qualification tournament to her late father, who passed away a few months before. She has not publicly commented on her withdrawal from the Olympic bout.
Khelif won the bout by default after 46 seconds of the first round.
The scandal has cast a shadow over the boxing competition at the Paris Olympics, which is already facing criticism for its lack of transparency and accountability.
The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has been accused of corruption and mismanagement, and the sport was nearly dropped from the Olympic program for the 2024 Games.
The AIBA has promised to reform its operations, but the scandal at the Paris Olympics is a major setback for the organization.
